Das Malen nach Vorlagen wird von Vielen kritisch gesehen. Was ist eigentlich eine Vorlage? Ich verwende gerne Fotografien, die ich im Internet finde. Ich drucke sie mir farbig und Schwarz/Weiß aus, um nicht durch die Farben zu stark festgelegt zu werden. In den Malkursen werden oft  Bilder der Kursleiter als Vorlage verwendet, dann versuche ich eine eigene Bild-Aussage zu finden. Gelegentlich sehe ich mir Bilder anderer Maler an und versuche dann deren Wiedergabe einer Szene neu zu interpretieren. Dies kann durch andere Farbwahl, Wahl eines anderen Ausschnittes, durch Hinzufügen oder Weglassen von Objekten geschehen. Dies ist aus meiner Sicht der Unterschied zur Kopie. Eine Kopie ist eine möglichst genaue Wiedergabe des Originals. Kopien kann man zu Übungszwecken malen und sie müssen aber im eigenen Bilderfundus bleiben.  

Szenen, Blickwinkel, Malstil und auch Farben variieren und dennoch kann es schon mal passieren, dass eine ähnliche Bildidee wie die eines anderen Malers entsteht. Ich betrachte das gelassen, weil jedes Bild in der Regel  anders ausfällt, auch wenn man das Motiv 2-3 mal malt, außer man ist wirklich ein "guter" Kopierer. Ich halte deshalb von der ganzen Copyright Diskussion wenig. Wer Probleme sieht, soll sich einfach melden, man wird immer eine einvernehmliche Lösung finden.

Using artwork of others in painting is seen very critical by many people.  I think one has to differentiate between being influenced by a certain style or idea in the artwork or copying the painting without any own interpretation. The simplest form of a template is a photo. Even by a photo one can be influenced by the viewing angle, the focus, the colors or the cutout. I frequently use photos which I can find in the internet, I print them in color and in B/W not to be influenced to much by the colors.

In the painting lessons the teachers frequently allow to use some of their artwork as  a template and encourage to make your own interpretation. I think this a great way to improve ones own painting abilities.  Andreas Mattern, one of the best current German watercolor painters, always told us in the courses:  " you can even try to copy my paintings but your picture will look different anyway. "

No one who is painting can avoid to be influenced by paintings of others but I always try to find a new interpretation by other colors, adding or removing objects, other cutouts or viewing angles. I think the debate about copyright is sometimes a bit strange. A copy is a nearly exact replica of the original. I am not good in copying. If I paint the same motive twice or several times it always looks different and that's exactly what I like. I try to find the best interpretation of a scene from my point of view not copying others. Nevertheless it can always happen that a painting looks similar to the painting of an other artist but it was never intended. If one sees a problem in it  she/he shall contact me. We will always find a solution.
